In the winter of 2022, we participated in a Social Innovation Fellowship with @4frontbaltimore. This 12-week entrepreneurship program is designed to inspire and empower Jewish teens to be change makers in the community.
The Social Innovation Fellowship or SIF as it is called was a really awesome experience for us. There were about a dozen kids from various schools who were put into small teams. Together we prompted to identify a problem in the community and work towards Tikkun Olam, repairing the world.
We, along with another partner, chose to tackle homelessness in Baltimore. While we realized we could not solve the issue of homelessness, we decided that maybe we could help those experiencing homelessness be a little more comfortable during our long cold winters.
We founded Keeping Baltimore Warm, a company that would sell beautiful, cozy blankets. For every blanket sold, we would donate a less expensive, but warm, blanket to a local shelter. At the final Demo Day event, each team pitched their business ideas for a better Baltimore to a panel of community leaders. Keeping Baltimore Warm, won!
Over the summer and fall of 2022, we discussed how we could turn this business/philanthropic concept into a reality. Our discussions led us to a similar yet simpler concept that we felt was achievable. The rest is, as they say, is history.
